Abstract :

Nigeria has been experiencing insecurity issues for some time now. These insecurity issues ranging from kidnapping, cultism, militancy, ethno-religious conflicts, armed robbery, murder etc. has had a telling effect on the country, thereby halting economic and infrastructural development in the country. Hence, qualifying the assertion of Robert McNamara which says "security is development and without security there will be no development". However, such issues became prevalent in the society due to the inability of security agencies to carry out their intelligence gathering function as expected of them. Therefore, it was in the light of this reality that the study was carried out. The paper adopted Systems theory as its theoretical framework to evaluate issues associated with intelligence gathering in Nigeria. Secondary data method was used which permits the researcher to consult internet newspapers, academic journal, research sites etc. for data collection. The paper agrees that, the security of the state is dependent on intelligence gathering, without which the state is bound to suffer different kinds of insecurity challenges. Thus, validating the fact that there's a linkage between intelligence gathering and the security of a state. The study made the following recommendations; Proper orientation and re-orientation of security personnel, synergy in intelligence efforts, win the trust of citizens and adequate payment of security personnel.
