Abstract :

This study examines and compares the roles, contributions, challenges, and successes of women in conflict resolution and peacebuilding in Nigeria and Sudan, focusing on their respective socio-political and conflict contexts. It investigates how women participate in peace processes, the structural and cultural barriers they face, and the differences in their mediation roles across the two countries. The paper adopts a qualitative comparative methodology relying on mixed method, comprising of secondary sources of data collection, including academic literature, policy reports, and documents from international organizations, and integrates findings from primary data through focus group discussions (FGDs). The analysis highlights the indigenous and informal strategies women have employed in both countries to resolve conflicts, often in the absence of formal state support. In Sudan, women played a pivotal role during the 2018–2019 revolution, yet their involvement in post-revolution governance and formal peace negotiations remains limited. On the other hand, Nigeria has established institutional mechanisms such as the National Action Plan for implementing United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, though the effectiveness of these initiatives is hampered by poor implementation at the grassroots level. Despite shared challenges such as entrenched patriarchy and limited funding for women-led initiatives, Sudanese women’s engagement in transnational feminist networks and revolutionary movements has catalyzed a broader precedent for women's inclusion in mediation. The study concludes by advocating for the institutionalization of women’s roles in formal peace processes, the strengthening of national Women, Peace and Security (WPS) frameworks, and the empowerment of grassroots women’s organizations to enhance sustainable peacebuilding in both contexts.
